Did you know that 61% of Mainers used outdoor trails for recreation in the past year1?
It’s true! With over 33,000 square miles of wilderness, it’s easy to see why Maine families love to hike. Residents of the Pine Tree State can enjoy rugged rocky coastlines, crisp tree-lined forest trails and more. There are thousands of trails to choose from statewide that are fun and accessible for individuals of different abilities, interests, and ages.
Hiking also offers health benefits, such as:
- Lower stress
- Increased muscle strength
- Better heart health2
There are a ton of ways you can join in on the fun! Here are three places where you can find a trail that you and your family will enjoy:
- Maine Trail Finder: a free, interactive mapping site to help you easily find hiking and walking trails across the state
- Maine’s Bureau of Parks and Lands Website: a free resource from the state of Maine that allows you to search by specific regions, accessibility information and features, and more
- AllTrails: available either online or as a free mobile app, you can find trail maps and guides with certain search features (such as the ability to filter by trails that are located along historic sites or waterfalls)
